On his journey to a career in nursing

After moving to Australia from the Philippines seven years ago, 19-year-old Philip Marcelo is well on his way to achieving his dream of becoming a theatre nurse.

By Philip Marcelo, TAFE Queensland graduate

I studied a Certificate III in Individual Support - Ageing (CHC33015) at the Dalby campus full time and without TAFE's friendly staff and teachers' help and support, I wouldn't have been able to successfully complete this course.

During my course I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to do a placement in Chinchilla. While doing my placement, it made me realise that there's more to nursing than just being a carer. I've learnt that by knowing the person, you're able to deliver the care that they need.

My teacher has always encouraged and inspired me to become engrossed in my learning. She professionally demonstrated the practical side of the topics we discussed in class while giving us techniques, tips and tricks that helped a lot when doing my vocational placement.

The students in my class were the people that I looked up to — not only because they were a few years older or that I was the youngest in class, but because they were more experienced in life. I enjoyed studying with my fellow students, especially the individuals with the same goal as me.

Studying through TAFE Queensland made me more confident and competent for the job. It's been an insightful and positive learning experience for me. I'm very appreciative for all the opportunities of the professional development that TAFE Queensland has provided me. I've learned that every individual is different and that communication, body language, and getting to know your residents are the necessities for this job.

I chose TAFE Queensland for the multiple pathways I could take for my nursing career. I'm looking to enrol into the Diploma of Nursing (HLT54115) at the Toowoomba campus now that I've finished my certificate. The certificate helped me gain experience in the industry before I start my diploma. My plan is to complete my diploma, successfully graduate from university with my bachelor degree, and become a theatre nurse.

My advice to someone looking to get into this industry is to try it. It's worth trying, because that's when you can decide whether you'll like it or not. Remember, knowledge is something no one can take away from you. I highly recommend studying at TAFE Queensland because of the endless opportunities, various range of courses, flexible study options, and the support you get with your studies.

To the future and current students that are enrolled at TAFE Queensland, this is my final advice — it's not about the destination, but the journey that matters. So take it easy and be patient, and you'll get to where you're meant to be.
