Styling hair is a family affair for the Melville's

The Bribie Island based mother and daughter duo cut, clip and style the locals locks from Blondies Hair Salon.

After completing her Certificate III in Hairdressing (SHB30416) with TAFE Queensland, Karlah opened her own salon, and her mother Carol would help around the salon - sweeping, taking bookings and making tea for staff and clients.

“Helping out Karlah two days a week was more enjoyable than my day job as a supermarket merchandising administration manager,” says Carol, with a laugh.

“So when the opportunity to join the salon full time as a hairdressing apprentice I just thought ‘why not’?”

When her mum decided to make a career change, Karlah encouraged her to study the Certificate III in Hairdressing (SHB30416) through TAFE Queensland.

“I know how incredible TAFE Queensland’s hairdressing facilities and educators are. I knew that if mum studied at Caboolture like I did, and was guided by their industry professionals and taught in their salons, she’d get the skills to hit the ground running as soon as possible,” says Karlah.

Now the mother-daughter duo are working in the salon together, creating an inviting family atmosphere for their clients where they dye, cut and style hair for events and for everyday wear.

“Our customers like coming here because of our atmosphere and the expert service we provide. Thanks to our training we have the skills to provide them with a range of services so when they leave our chairs, they walk out feeling great!” Karlah said.

Both mother and daughter integrate what they learnt from TAFE Queensland into their treatments, from quick trims to total transformations and everything in between.

Karlah enjoys running her own business with her apprentice mother, where the focus on providing a great range of services and having fun along the way.

“Sometimes, people ask me if they can speak to the manager, assuming I’m the apprentice and mum is the boss, which is always a laugh! Our collaborative approach to running the salon while making our clients’ day is what keeps us both passionate about the business.”

“We love our customers and it’s a fun place and a fun job to come to each day,” Carol adds.

“Most people have to sit down and work in front of a computer. I get to go to work and make people feel good - you just can’t get bored in this business,” she said with a smile.
