Connecting Council Workers with Digital Skills Training

Free workplace training, provided by expert TAFE Queensland educators, is available through the Foundation Skills for Your Future (FSFYF) program. 

Recently, TAFE Queensland delivered a project for council workers on Thursday Island targeting digital and workplace health and safety skills.

When Wunig Darua began the course at Torres Shire Council, he shared his reservations with his teacher.

At 61 years old, Wunig was anxious about his lack of experience with computers, but knew that digital skills had become a key component of the workplace.

“Wunig only completed a few years of schooling when he was younger, so he was anxious about returning to the classroom,” said TAFE Queensland educator Janus Gronvald.

“When he first joined in, he found it hard to find letters on the keyboard, and was having troubles with the mouse.”

To ease Wunig’s reservations, Janus teamed him with a younger colleague, who was able to work through everything alongside him.

Incredibly, by the end of the week, Wunig was tackling electronic incident reports by himself, and using Microsoft Word to write up formal documents.

Wunig’s improved digital literacy has led him to feel more confident in the workplace and become more efficient in his role.
