Course overview

Make a start on your career in the media with this entry-level course. This qualification will give you the foundation skills needed to work in a number of assistant roles in radio, film, sound, media, and web design. 

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the number of people working as performing arts technicians — including camera operators, lighting technicians, and sound technicians — grew very strongly over the past five years. Stable future growth is expected in this occupational area with employers looking for workers who are reliable, work well in a team, and have a strong work ethic. 

Learn the practical skills and knowledge to create content for a range of media and visual design components, follow the design process, and develop and extend critical and creative thinking skills. Our highly experienced and passionate teaching team have years of industry experience and will give you the one-on-one guidance needed to prepare you for a career in media.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to work in a variety of roles as either a community radio programmer or presenter, camera and lighting assistant, sound technician, media professional, or web designer. It will also give you the core skills needed to undertake further study in the field.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

You must have completed year 10 or equivalent.
Enrolment Conditions apply for students under 17 years of age.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Depending on the campus you enrol into, you may be required to purchase a TAFE Queensland Crew Shirt for wearing on shoot. The purchase of this shirt will incur an additional cost of approximately $20. 
For Workplace, Health and Safety reasons, closed in shoes must be worn for indoor and outdoor shoots.

You will also require access to:

  • personal stationery (notebook, pen, pencil)
  • headphones
  • external hard drive (500 GB minimum)

These may incur additional costs.

  • a Microsoft Windows 10 or 11 Operating System laptop or PC
    • Apple Mac, iPad are not compatible for this course
  • A portable Hard Drive preferably a 500 Gigabyte Solid State Drive (SSD)
    •  A USB only is not suitable.

  • Microsoft Office products: Word and PowerPoint.

You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
