Course overview

Set yourself on the path to a career in the electrical trades with this entry-level course. Develop the essential knowledge and skills required to become an appliance service repair technician. With the electrical services industry one of the largest special construction industries in Australia, there is high demand for qualified workers with over 50,000 job openings in the next five years.

In this course you will learn how to set up, service and repair electrical and refrigerated appliances. Gain practical skills in solving problems in extra-low voltage (ELV) single path circuits, connecting refrigerant tubing and fittings, and using drawings, diagrams, schedules, standards, codes and specifications in various energy sector work functions. You'll also gain industry-relevant skills in occupational health and safety and applying environmentally sustainable work practices.

Selection criteria

To study an apprenticeship program you must be indentured as an apprentice with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources to qualify for an apprentice.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.
This includes the use of:

  • safety glasses
  • protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • leather gloves to AS2161
  • hair protection
  • 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

Assessment methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
