Course overview

This post trade course will help you to enhance your electrical skill set. Develop the practical skills and knowledge required to become a split air conditioning and heat pump installer. With 50,000 expected job openings over the next five years for electrical tradespersons, now is the time to become a part of this growing industry.

In this course you will learn how to design, quote and install, reverse cycle air conditioning unit systems. You will also develop skills in positioning, assembling and starting up single-head split air conditioning units and systems to a prescribed routine. Our industry experienced teachers will give you all the support and one-on-one guidance you need to succeed.

Upon successful completion of this course you can apply for the licence required to install and decommission single-head split system air conditioners (up to 18 kilowatts) and become a split air conditioning and heat pump installer.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

Whilst there are no formal entry requirements for this course, TAFE Queensland has the following selection criteria.

You must hold a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820/UEE30811) qualification to be eligible to undertake this course.  If you only hold an Electrical license you may be able to undertake an RPL process, at an additional cost, to be eligible for entry.

You must also apply to the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) www.arctick.org for a Classroom (CL000) or Trainee (TL000) Refrigerant Handling Licence.  Please refer to your location for further details.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.

This includes the use of:

  • safety glasses
  • protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • long leather gloves to AS2161
  • hair protection
  • 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.

You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
