Course overview

Progress your career in the outdoor power equipment industry with the skills to work as a small engine mechanic. This mid-level course is perfect for individuals aiming to further their career or gain a qualification as an outdoor power equipment repair technician.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, demand for qualified mechanics (including small engine mechanics) grew strongly over the past five years with employers finding it hard to fill vacancies. Job openings are expected to remain steady in the near future with around 23,000 job opening expected over the next five years. 

You will develop the practical skills and knowledge required to undertake repair and servicing of electrical and mechanical outdoor power equipment including, lawn mowers, chainsaws, brush cutters, pumps and other similar equipment. Additionally, you will learn how to identify the components of small engines, perform daily maintenance, and carry out safe refuelling and pre-start checks. Training is delivered in our world-class workshops, supported by industry-experienced teachers.

Successful completion of this course will provide the technical knowledge and skills required to work as an outdoor power equipment repair technician. If completed as part of an apprenticeship, it may also lead to a trade qualification.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

To study an apprenticeship program you must be indentured as an apprentice with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources to qualify for an apprentice.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.
This includes the use of:

  • clear safety glasses to AS 1336 or 1337
  • protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • hair protection - All persons having long hair will wear hair protection when working with or around moving machinery or whilst in designated areas of operation
  • broad brimmed hat
  • 100% cotton drill industry-standard protective clothing. Long sleeved shirts are highly recommended, singlet tops are not allowed.

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

Assessment methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
