Course overview

Kick start your career in civil construction with this entry-level course. Gain the basic skills and knowledge needed to become a civil construction worker or labourer.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, there is strong future growth predicted for building and plumbing labourers, including civil construction labourers. There are likely to be around 70,000 job openings expected in this very large occupation over the next five years. 

In this course you'll gain the practical skills and fundamental knowledge needed to perform routine tasks including manual excavation, concreting, trench work, pipe laying, and pothole repair. You will also develop a range of transferable skills including communicating in the workplace, planning and organising work, and working safely by following OHS policies and procedures. Our experienced teachers will give you the one-on-one support you need to succeed.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to work as a civil construction worker or labourer. You can also continue to progress your career with further study at a certificate III and IV level.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

To study a traineeship program you must be indentured as a trainee with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide necessary human and physical resources to qualify for a trainee.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.
This includes the use of:

  • safety glasses
  • protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • long leather gloves to AS2161
  • hair protection
  • You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Assessment methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
