Course overview

Increase your knowledge and gain specialised skills in justice with this mid-level qualification. You can open up a wide range of exciting employment opportunities with the Police Service, or within justice-related fields such as Border Force and Corrections.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the number of people employed by the Police Service is expected to grow strongly over the next five years. This is a very large occupational field with around 9,000 job openings expected in the next five years.

Learn specialised skills in the application of regulatory powers, analysing social justice issues, and identifying and applying the legal framework. You'll also gain technical and analytical knowledge to prepare documentation for court proceedings and the ability to communicate and provide justice-related advice to clients.

Successfully completing this course will allow you to apply for work in many justice and legal related roles. You will also develop a solid foundation for further study.

Entry requirements

You are required to satisfy at least one of the following before commencing this course as it provides the essential skills that form the basis of study for this qualification:

  • successful completion of Certificate III qualification, or
  • completion of Year 10 or equivalent with sound achievement in English, or
  • relevant work life experience in the business or justice fields.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at most TAFE Queensland locations.

Robina campus
The Robina campus will be a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) campus for general learning.  Students are able to access discounted pricing for device purchases via JB Hi-Fi.  TAFE Queensland will have some portable devices available for short term loan and there will also be a limited number of desktop computers located on-site that students will be able to access.  For all the details visit the BYOD page on our website. 

Important information

To be eligible for the Higher Level Skills subsidised price, you must:

  • be aged 15 years or over, and be no longer at school;
  • permanently reside in Queensland;
  • be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrant), temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency, or a New Zealand citizen;
  • not hold a certificate IV or higher-level qualification, not including qualifications completed at school and foundation skills training; and
  • not be enrolled in another qualification, not including foundation skills training.

When studying Online self-directed it is strongly recommended students follow the order of study and enrol in no more than two units per intake or the units required to complete one cluster/stage, unless otherwise advised.

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning. If you want to go on to further study at university, TAFE Queensland has a pathway option to get you there. In many cases, completing one of our diplomas may give you a full year of credit towards a degree with one of our partner universities.
