Course overview

Kick start your automotive career as a parts interpreter or vehicle salesperson with this practical qualification. Parts interpreting covers a wide range of industry areas including light automotive, motorcycles, heavy commercial vehicles, outdoor power equipment, boat chandlery, mobile plant equipment, farm machinery, and paint and panel repair.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, demand for motor vehicle and vehicle parts salespeople is expected to grow in the near future. This large occupation is expected to create around 31,000 job openings over the next five years. 

Throughout this course you will receive training in sales and marketing including merchandising and promotion, interacting with and building customer relations, and responding to customer enquiries and complaints. You will also learn about warehousing operations and how to select and supply automotive parts.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to work as a parts interpreter in an automotive retail outlet or mechanical service and repair business.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

Entry to this qualification is usually through an indenture as an apprentice, find out more on how to become an apprentice or trainee; or
via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
Note: In some cases, credit towards this qualification may apply from previously completed study. School based apprenticeships are also available. If you want to know more, please telephone Apprenticeships Info on 1800 210 210.

Minimum age: Entry into an apprenticeship or traineeship is generally limited to individuals who are 16 years of age or older. In special circumstances consideration may be given to individuals 13 years or older seeking to enter into an apprenticeship or traineeship. Queensland legislation applies age restrictions to particular apprenticeships and traineeships.

If you are under 18 years of age at the start date of your apprenticeship or traineeship, your parent or guardian must sign the training contract.

Education: Levels of education that should be attained prior to entry into the apprenticeship may be recommended but these are not mandatory unless the levels are set in legislation. Resources required

  • Protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210 are required while engaged in work activities and while students are in designated areas of TAFE Queensland

  • It is recommended that students have access to a reliable Internet connection to access a computer

Assessment methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
