This accredited course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to safely depower and reinitialise battery electric vehicles. carry out testing, and maintenance of battery electric vehicles. Diagnose and repair high voltage rechargeable energy storage systems and diagnose and repair system instrumentation and safety interlocks in battery electric vehicles.   

You will learn how to: 

  • Be high voltage safety aware
  • Safe operating procedures for tools and equipment
  • Identify a battery electric vehicle (BEV) and their main components
  • Operating principles of system instrumentation and safety interlocks in BEV
  • Ensure high voltage (HV) rechargeable energy storage systems (RESS) are safely isolated
  • Safely test, service and maintain BEV
  • Diagnostic and repair procedures for system instrumentation, safety interlocks and HV RESS
  • Re-initialisation of the energy storage system
  • Performance testing RESS 

This accredited course will cover the required performance outcomes for individuals to safely depower and reinitialise battery electric vehicles. It involves ensuring that the vehicles high voltage (HV) rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) is isolated in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications before commencing any work to these vehicles. This course also covers information around workshop set up, personal protective equipment (PPE) and special tool requirements.

Entry requirements

This skill set is limited to those who have completed one of the following qualifications:

  • AUR30320 Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology or equivalent
  • AUR30620 Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology or equivalent
  • AUR31120 Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology or equivalent
  • AUR31220 Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology, or equivalent. (Graduates of the EWP stream must have completed AURETR129 Diagnose and repair charging systems and AURETR130 Diagnose and repair starting systems)
Selection criteria

Candidates must be working in the automotive service, repair and manufacturing segment.

You must not have a pacemaker, another medical device, or a condition that can be affected by the strong permanent magnets within an EV, as per AS5732:2022 (Sect 2.1).

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes. 
You must supply your own personal protective equipment.

Personal Protective Equipment

Students failing to meet required personal protective equipment standards of dress listed below, will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

The required personal protective equipment will consist of:

  • Eye protection – Clear safety glasses, (tinted or sunglasses not acceptable). These must conform to the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1336 or 1337.
  • Protective footwear – Safety toe, leather upper, non-slip safety footwear must be worn. They must comply with Australian Standard AS 2210 and be in good condition.
  • Protective clothing – Long sleeved shirts and long pants – industrial cotton drill work wear, must be worn at all times.
  • Hand protection - Mechanic gloves
  • Ear protection - Ear plugs or ear muffs

  • Highlighter

Other materials may be required for assignment work; these will be discussed in class.

Important information

To be eligible for the Higher Level Skills subsidised price, you must:

  • be aged 15 years or over, and be no longer at school;
  • permanently reside in Queensland;
  • be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrant), temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency, or a New Zealand citizen;
  • not hold a certificate IV or higher-level qualification, not including qualifications completed at school and foundation skills training; and
  • not be enrolled in another qualification, not including foundation skills training.
