Four reasons to study a diploma
Choosing a course to study isn't just about choosing the right study area, it's also about choosing the right qualification level.
If you've already completed a certificate level qualification, are ready to take the next step in your career, or want to get into university, then a diploma at TAFE Queensland could be just what you're looking for.
Skills
The Australian Qualifications Framework states that diploma graduates will have specialised knowledge and skills for skilled/paraprofessional work or further learning.
Our translation? Diploma level courses develop broad and in-depth skills in professional, technical or creative fields. Skills taught include planning, development and management. Diploma students will also develop their analytical, problem-solving, and communication abilities.
So if you're looking to upgrade your entry-level theoretical and practical skills, the perfect next step could be to study a diploma.
Employment
To study and complete a diploma may be a requirement in your chosen industry. For example, to become an early childhood education and care worker you will need a certificate III, but if you want to progress to a room leader or centre manager role you will need a diploma. Speak with people who work in the field or check with relevant industry bodies to see what qualifications are required for different levels in your industry.
Diplomas can also boost your employment opportunities in a number of ways. They can make you stand out above someone with a lower qualification in the application process. If you've been in the industry for a number of years and are looking to take the next step in your career, formalising your experience with a diploma can help you develop the skills you need to succeed and show your boss you're ready to take on more responsibility.
Pay
Let's face it, we've all got bills to pay. Sometimes you just want or need a better paying job, and if you study a diploma level qualification this can help you get there. If we use myskills.gov.au to compare a general business administration officer's average weekly salary of $1,000 with a project administrator's of almost $1,400, there's a clear difference. Why? One will most likely have completed a certificate III, while the other is more likely to hold a diploma qualification.
Improving your qualifications and skills can also be a great way to improve your chances of getting the pay rise you want. You could complete a short course that complements your skills, or have your existing skills recognised through recognition of prior learning (RPL). Don't discount the power of upgrading your skills through a diploma, especially if you want to move into management and decision-making positions.
Pathways
Studying a diploma is also a great pathway to university. In many cases, you can receive up to a year of credit or enter straight into the second year of a degree.
