Jobs boom in energy sector sparks surge in new training opportunities
There has never been a better time for Queenslanders to upskill themselves for a future in the energy industry, with a surge in job openings in the field predicted over the next five years.
The Queensland Government’s $62 billion, 10-year investment into the state’s energy sector comes with an estimated 14,600 new job openings between 2021 and 2026. Furthermore, the National Skills Commission reported there were 918 electrician jobs advertised in Queensland in August 2022, an almost 50% increase compared to the 622 listed a year earlier.
As part of its commitment to helping Queensland to reach its ambitious target of 70 per cent renewable energy by 2032, TAFE Queensland is developing new training and progressing existing training to ensure apprentices trained at the state’s largest training provider become the industry leaders of tomorrow in solar, wind, storage, hydrogen, and electric vehicles.
TAFE Queensland – SkillsTech General Manager John Tucker said there had never been a better time for Queenslanders to get job-ready for a future in energy.
“With over $20 million invested in our electrical training facilities and teachers who remain embedded in industry, we are known for delivering quality training to a large portion of Queensland’s electrotechnology sector,” he said.

“TAFE Queensland is seeing a surge in enrolments into qualifications aligned with the energy sector across Queensland. There was a 21% increase in energy-related apprentices enrolled at TAFE Queensland between the 2019-20 and 2021-22 financial years, with the Certificate III in Electrotechnology proving to be the most popular.”
TAFE Queensland is the state’s leading training provider for the Certificate III in Electrotechnology (UEE30811), training around 70 per cent of the total electrical apprentices employed in Queensland.
