TAFE Queensland barber conditioned to a busy and fulfilling life

Barber and business owner Junior Faamalele owns three (soon to be four) Cornerstone Barbershops and teaches Certificate III in Barbering (SHB30516) and Certificate II in Salon Assistant (SHB20216) at Salon on Mary, located within TAFE Queensland’s Ipswich campus.

Junior is also a husband and father to six teens, as well as the Senior Chairman at his local footy club in Redbank, Brisbane.

“I’ve got a busy life. I’m a third-generation barber — I’ve been in the industry since 1997,” Junior explained.

“Given I’d been working for so long, I wanted to step away from the chair, but still be involved with the trade itself, and also give back to the next generation,” shared Junior as to why he chose to take up teaching.

“I equally love being able to pass on the knowledge I’ve gained over my years in the industry. It’s really expanded from how it used to be — everyone wants to be a barber when they leave school.”

“Especially when you see the young people who previously had no real direction in life and are now considering this career path.”

For Junior, witnessing his students gain the knowledge and skills for successful careers in the industry is one of the most satisfying aspects of teaching.

“It’s really rewarding to pass on the knowledge that we have, to really build a strong industry and one that gives young people an option to pursue a better future,” shared Junior.

“Another thing that’s really enjoyable for me is to really see and be a part of my students’ journey.”

“I remember the good teachers I had growing up as well — I know I'll never forget them, so if I can be that person, and leave an imprint on the next generation — I hope that will leave the industry in good hands,” Junior said.

Junior joined the TAFE Queensland Ipswich teaching team in 2021, after completing a Certificate IV in Training and Education (TAE40116) with TAFE Queensland.

“As we all know, over the years TAFE Queensland has stood the test of time and it's really elevated to a prestige stage,” he said.

“It's a great teaching environment, and a great organisation to be part of.”

TAFE Queensland barbering students have access to a full range of products and equipment at their fingertips, with Junior teaching practical skills in the fully-operational salon at the Ipswich campus.

As a barbershop owner, Junior stays on-track with trends and shares his first-hand experience with his students.

“I stay industry current by owning the barbershops — I can see new trends — it’s something I really enjoy,” Junior said.

Another way Junior stays industry current is by his dedicated barbershop visits.

“I visit our apprentices to ensure they’re getting real-world, hands-on opportunities to practise their skills in the workplace,” he said.

“I complete assessments and I communicate to barbershop owners and managers about the flexible training that we offer.”

As for what greatness means to Junior: “Greatness means just being good at what you do to the best of your ability.”

The next generations of barbers, and their clients, are in great hands.
