"I always knew I should be a nurse" - Ana goes from doubt to determination

The 37-year-old mother had an unyielding passion for nursing and a fascination with the complexities of the human body - a passion she believed was her true calling.

“I always knew I should be a nurse. I have a natural fascination with the human body and thought of aiding others has always appealed to me,” said Ana.

Despite her clear vision, Ana faced personal hurdles, including undiagnosed learning difficulties, which clouded the path to her true calling.

“School was a challenge for me; focusing and seeing tasks through to completion did not come easily and I really struggled through those years,” she said.

“I always knew deep down that nursing was my true calling, but the fear of repeating my school experience and potentially wasting my time held me back.”

Surrounded by academically accomplished women, Ana was no stranger to success. Her mother and sister, both Bachelor of Nursing graduates, were role models to what could be achieved. 

"Seeing my mum and sister navigate through their nursing degrees, even amidst life's challenges, instilled in me the belief that I could do it too, whenever I was ready,” she said.

The turning point came with the support of her family, especially her husband, who encouraged her to pursue her dreams. Ana decided to enrol into the Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) at TAFE Queensland's Southport campus, a decision shaped by practicality and mindfulness of her own needs.

“The Fee-Free Diploma of Nursing offered by TAFE Queensland presented a viable path forward, removing financial hurdles and providing a flexible, accommodating learning environment,” she said.

For Ana, the diploma serves as a crucial first step toward her ultimate goal of completing the Bachelor of Nursing.

"Starting with the diploma was necessary for me. It's about proving to myself that I can handle the coursework before moving on to the bachelor degree," she said.

"After completing the first stage of the diploma, I aim to secure an Assistant in Nursing (AIN) role, enabling me to gain practical experience in the industry while furthering my education."

Ana’s story showcases the impact of support, self-belief, and the courage to pursue one's dreams when the time is right, no matter the obstacles.
