Chipping and kicking his way to success

When he’s not running around as one of the beloved North Queensland Toyota Cowboys, Jake’s talent for grinding, fixing and building, is proof that legends can also come in the form of those wearing a tool belt.

Jake Granville is not your usual tradie. When he’s not grinding, fixing or building something, he’s most likely passing, running or tackling - in the nicest and healthiest way possible, of course.

When not working toward his carpentry apprenticeship, Jake is best known as a North Queensland Toyota Cowboys legend, set to reach his milestone 200th club match in 2024.

But for life after football, Jake chose TAFE Queensland to pursue his goal of becoming a ‘chippie’, proving that legends can also come in the form of those wearing a tool belt.

While it’s not every day that a star like Jake trains at TAFE Queensland for his Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220) qualification, it is every day that greatness happens at TAFE Queensland.

“TAFE Queensland offers a great deal of flexibility around my footy and life commitments and has been super helpful and great to deal with throughout my footy career and now as I prepare for my next chapter,” Jake said.

“I’ve had a really positive experience studying at TAFE Queensland thanks to the great practical training opportunities and the support and encouragement of my teachers.”

“I’m also proud to continue the Granville family history of studying with TAFE Queensland, following my uncle and sister who have studied there as well.”

“I’d highly recommend studying at TAFE Queensland to any young player going through their career, it’s not only a great way to get started but also to set themselves up for the future.”

The state’s largest and most experienced training provider, TAFE Queensland is the official Vocational Education and Training (VET) Partner of the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys.

Throughout a three-year Major Partnership with the Cowboys, the TAFE Queensland logo will be proudly displayed on the lower back of the NRL Cowboys’ home and away playing jerseys.

TAFE Queensland will also be a presenting partner of a module in the club’s Try Time! schools’ program, which educates students in Years 10 to 12 about creating respectful relationships.

TAFE Queensland General Manager (North) Susan Kinobe said the training partnership was a game changer.

“As the 2023 Australian Large Training Provider of the Year, TAFE Queensland is excited to partner with the Cowboys to provide local people with greater access to training opportunities than ever before,” Mrs Kinobe said.

“Our training enables people to build lifelong careers, provides employers with skilled and job-ready workers, and significantly reduces social exclusion within our communities.”

"Together with the Cowboys, TAFE Queensland looks forward to helping North Queenslanders kick new goals this year.”

Good onya Jake! What an inspiration you are to those looking to build a career in this high-demand industry.
