Ploy is fashioning her Australian dream

Since arriving in Australia from Thailand 11 years ago and along with raising three children, Ploy has been actively upskilling with TAFE Queensland to improve her spoken and written English skills, and enhance her employability.

Accessing the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP), Ploy has completed communication and digital technology units, and participated in workplace readiness programs, that included the equivalent of 40 hours of work experience.

So enthused by her TAFE learning experience, Ploy also completed some units from the Certificate II in Applied Fashion Design and Technology.

“These study units and courses at TAFE Queensland provided me the relevant skills to be applied at work,” Ploy said.

“It gave me skills and confidence.”

Ploy is working full time at Reali Supply, a uniform and safety supply services company at Meadowbrook, near Brisbane – her ideal job where she is combining her interest in sewing while improving her retail and warehousing skills.

“I enjoy my work at Reali Supply very much. My coworkers and managers are great people to work with and I plan to grow with the company,” Ploy said.

Ploy is keen to share her study story with people and encourages everyone to see what TAFE Queensland has to offer.

“I really liked studying with TAFE Queensland. I learned so much and I am very grateful,” Ploy said.

The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) offers free and basic English language classes to help people settle into their new life in Australia. The AMEP is funded by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs. In Queensland, the AMEP is delivered by TAFE Queensland.

Ploy completed units in the pre-employment work readiness program that included learning about Australian workplace culture, communication and digital technology.

“I am thankful for the support of TAFE Queensland and very happy to be working at Reali Supply,” Ploy said.

Reali Supply managing director Kane Thompson said Ploy had entered the workplace with confidence.

“TAFE Queensland gave Ploy the skills and confidence to enter the workforce and demonstrate her capabilities. I believe this, coupled with the supporting workplace that Reali offers, has allowed Ploy to develop a successful career within the textile industry in Australia,” Kane said.
