A 16-year-old's cinematic dream

Imagine stepping onto a movie set at 16, surrounded by cameras, actors and creative vibes. For Jack Anyos, this isn’t a fantasy—it’s reality.

Balancing Year 11 studies at St Joseph’s College with Screen and Media classes at TAFE Queensland, Jack is diving headfirst into the film industry, driven by passion, creativity, and a bit of serendipity.

Jack’s journey began with a connection as unexpected as a plot twist. His dad, mentored film director, Lawrence Silver, nearly two decades ago. Now, Lawrence is mentoring Jack on the set of 'The Girl Behind the Screen,' a psychological thriller being filmed on the Gold Coast.

“It’s like a full-circle moment," Jack said.

"I'm following in my dad's footsteps, and it's surreal to think I'm learning from the same person he once guided."

But it's not all Hollywood glamour. As a runner on set, Jack did everything from managing extras to ensuring the sound crew didn't trip while walking backwards - a task Jack found challenging on his first day.

“It was my first time on a movie set, and I was just trying to soak in everything. It was a test of my skills and adaptability,” he said.

Jack’s role went beyond learning the basics; it was also about building valuable connections. He worked alongside Damian Hussey, his TAFE teacher at the Coomera campus, showcasing the real-world experience TAFE Queensland delivers.

"Seeing Damian so involved in the industry made me feel confident that I was in the right place to advance my career,” he said.

Studying a Certificate III in Screen and Media (CUA31020) as part of the TAFE at School prgram, Jack said the supportive environment at TAFE Queensland’s Coomera campus has been a game-changer.

“I can express my creativity without fear of judgement. It's a place where everyone is encouraged to be themselves and pursue their passions,” he said.

Initially drawn to scriptwriting, Jack’s now exploring a broader range of roles within the industry.

"I want to try everything, from directing to other crew positions. It's about finding what fits and what excites me the most."

"One day I want to write a script or a book that becomes a feature film, and maybe even act in it one day. It’s a big dream, but hey, why not?" he said.

For other high school students contemplating a similar path, Jack has simple  advice -  "jump in with both feet, you'll be amazed at how much fun it can be.”
