Celebrating Cairns’ best in trades

Newly qualified light vehicle mechanic Kye Langford, 25, took out top honours at the TAFE Queensland 2024 Cairns Trade Excellence Awards on Thursday, 17 October 2024.

Over 1,500 apprentices and trainees train with TAFE Queensland in Cairns, and Mr Langford emerged victorious, claiming the trophies for Light Automotive Apprentice of the Year and the night’s top prize, Outstanding Apprentice of the Year.

“It feels good to be recognized for the work I’ve put in. You do what you've got to do, and this is a fantastic bonus,” Mr Langford said. “Professionally and personally, this shows that after all the effort I've put in, it's all worth it.”

Mr Langford’s passion for cars quickly led to success at Jax Tyres and Auto. Starting in 2020, he swiftly moved from tyre work to mechanical services, showing an eagerness to learn.

By mid-2021, Kye was working in the mechanical workshop, and his hands-on approach and fresh ideas saw him steadily rise through the ranks, eventually earning a managerial position.

Now fully qualified, Kye has completed his Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology (AUR30620) at no cost, thanks to the Queensland Government’s Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s program.

Reflecting on his future in the industry, Mr Langford said, “I’d love to own my own mechanic shop one day, or even a mobile business and travel around.”

“My teachers at TAFE Queensland have been amazing. They taught me everything I need to know and really prepared me for the workforce. They’ve pushed me to improve, increase my knowledge, and get the skills to do what I want to do,” he added.

Almost 300 people attended the Cairns Trade Excellence Awards at The Jack Hotel and Backpackers to celebrate the next generation of trades professionals.

TAFE Queensland North region Director of Educational Delivery for Trades and Transport, Maree Butler, said over 100 nominations were received, and the judges shortlisted 39 finalists.

“I would like to congratulate all the finalists and winners, especially Kye Langford for winning the major title of Outstanding Apprentice of the Year,” Ms Butler said. “Kye’s commitment, leadership, and enthusiasm throughout his apprenticeship have truly set him apart.”

Ms Butler also commended Kyezaya Namai-Sabatino from MRAEL, who won the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Trade Student of the Year Award. Kyezaya is currently completing his Certificate III in Engineering - Fixed and Mobile Plant Mechanic (MEM31419).

“Kyezaya’s dedication and passion for his work have made him an outstanding apprentice,” Ms Butler said. “He’s not only excelling in his trade but also mentoring others in his community, demonstrating the incredible impact of apprenticeships.”

She also applauded Audrey Thompson from Energy Queensland (Ergon Energy), winner of the Female Trade Student of the Year Award. Audrey is undertaking a Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade (Fitting/Machining) (MEM30219).

“Audrey’s enthusiasm for her work is contagious,” Ms Butler said. “She is showing young women that trades are not just an option—they are a rewarding and exciting career path.”

The 2024 Cairns Trade Excellence Awards would not be possible without the generous support of main event sponsor Cairns Hardware and category sponsors Actrol, Bidfood, BOC Gas & Gear, Cairns Hair Beauty Massage Supplies, Chef Link Hospitality Supplies, FNQ Same Day Antennas, Hanby Welding & Engineering, Haymans Electrical, HazElec Industries, Makita, Norstate Gas, Repco, Reward Hospitality, Tradelink, and TradeTools.
