Celebrating trade excellence in Mount Isa

Newly qualified boilermaker Frank Moro, 22, took out top honours at the TAFE Queensland 2024 Mount Isa Trade Excellence Awards on Thursday, 5 September 2024.

Around 500 apprentices and trainees train with TAFE Queensland in Mount Isa, and Frank Moro emerged victorious, claiming the trophies for Engineering: Boilermaking and Welding Apprentice of the Year and the night’s top prize, Outstanding Apprentice of the Year.

“It hasn't really sunk in yet,” Mr Moro said. “I'm so appreciative to get this recognition.”

Mr Moro’s journey into boilermaking began in high school, and his enthusiasm for the trade was evident from his early days as a TAFE at School student, doing the Certificate II in Engineering Pathway (MEM20413) course.

Frank’s contributions to Schmider Engineering Group have been equally impressive, where his professionalism, problem-solving skills, and proactive approach have made him an invaluable team member.

He is now a qualified boilermaker, having completed his Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade (Boilermaking / Welding) (MEM31922) at no cost, thanks to the Queensland Government’s Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s funding program.

Reflecting on his future in the industry, Mr Moro said, “I just want to try and get better every day and use what TAFE Queensland and my employer have taught me to try and do the best job I can.”

He credits his journey in the field to both his upbringing and his training at TAFE Queensland. “I was born here in Mount Isa and my dad has always been in the mining industry,” Mr Moro said.

“I went to school right next door to the TAFE Queensland campus, and I was lucky enough to do the TAFE at School program and meet teachers who saw something in me. They really set me up and helped me get my apprenticeship.”

More than 140 people attended the Mount Isa Trade Excellence Awards at the TAFE Queensland Mount Isa campus to celebrate the next generation of trades professionals.

TAFE Queensland North region Director of Educational Delivery for Trades and Transport Maree Butler said over 70 nominations were received, and the judges shortlisted 38 finalists.

“I would like to congratulate all the finalists and winners, especially Frank Moro for winning the major title of Outstanding Apprentice of the Year,” Ms Butler said. “Frank Moro has demonstrated exceptional dedication and enthusiasm throughout his apprenticeship at Schmider Engineering Group.”

“Starting as a TAFE at School student, Frank showed an impressive commitment to his trade. His strong work ethic, leadership skills, and proactive approach to learning have truly set him apart throughout his apprenticeship.”

Ms Butler also commended John Wehrman from MMG Dugald River Pty. Ltd., who won the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Trade Student of the Year Award. John is currently completing his Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology (AUR30320).

“John’s reliability and hands-on approach throughout his apprenticeship have made him a standout,” Ms Butler said. “He consistently supports his peers and is highly regarded in his field.”

She also applauded Jayda Kling from Mount Isa Mines Limited (Glencore), winner of the Female Trade Student of the Year Award.

“Jayda’s eagerness to learn and support for her fellow apprentices have made a significant impact,” Ms Butler said. “Her contributions help create a learning environment where others can thrive.”

Jayda has now completed her Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820).

The 2024 Mount Isa Trade Excellence Awards would not be possible without the generous support of main event sponsor Blackwoods and award sponsors BOC Gas & Gear, The Boss Shop, Haymans Electrical, Haz-Elec, Makita, Milwaukee, Napa Auto Parts, Repco, and Tool ‘N’ Tackle.
