Crafting a bright future through SchoolTech

Kody Ala is soaring to new heights, thanks to TAFE Queensland and Woree State High School’s SchoolTech program.

Kody Ala, a student at Woree State High School, has got a head start in his career through TAFE Queensland’s Cairns campus and Woree State High School’s SchoolTech program.

Kody has successfully completed both a Certificate II in Engineering Pathways (MEM20413) and a Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation (AUR20720), and is now working as an Avionics Technician with the Royal Australian Air Force.

SchoolTech is an award-winning partnership between TAFE Queensland and Woree State High School, allowing students get a head start in their careers and earn their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), and two Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications while they’re still in high school.

This program is designed to equip students with practical, real-world skills, preparing them for the workforce with work placements and the opportunity to secure apprenticeships or traineeships.

Kody’s older brother, Lyndon Ala, also participated in the program, completing the Certificate II in Engineering Pathways (MEM20413) before moving on to a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology (AUR31120).

Now, Lyndon is set to complete his four-year apprenticeship as a Diesel Fitter Mechanic at Clarke Diesel Repairs, supported by the Queensland Government's Fee-Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s initiative.

Their father, Daniel Ala, expressed immense pride on his son’s achievements in a letter to Woree State High School. “As I reflect on Kody's path, I am reminded of the transformative power of education,” he said.

“Your program, SchoolTech, has not only equipped Kody with the technical skills necessary for success but has also instilled in him a profound sense of purpose and determination.”

“This is a testament to the boundless opportunities that lie ahead when one is guided by passion and supported by a community of dedicated mentors like yourselves."

Thanks to the program, Kody’s day-to-day will now consist of maintaining, servicing, and repairing state-of-the-art aircraft such as the C-17A Globemaster III, F-35A Lightning II, and P-8A Poseidon.

Expressing his gratitude, Daniel Ala said, “Thank you, SchoolTech, for your enduring time, unwavering support, and relentless dedication to shaping the future leaders of tomorrow.”

“Your belief in Kody’s potential has not only empowered him to pursue his dreams but has also inspired him to strive for excellence in every endeavour. The difference you make in the lives of your students is immeasurable, and for that, we are eternally grateful.”
