Diamondport Jewellers Marks 10 Years of Sponsoring Jewellery Awards

For the past ten years, Diamondport Jewellers has proudly supported the next generation of jewellers through their sponsorship of the prestigious TAFE Queensland Apprentice Jeweller of the Year Awards.

Marking this decade-long milestone, Diamondport Jewellers has played a crucial role in fostering new talent, offering apprentices the chance to showcase their work and hone the skills essential to the jewellery industry.

Diamondport Jewellers first became involved in the sponsorship through its founder, Ashley Portas, who has deep ties to the jewellery trade.

Initially working for a diamond wholesaler who actively supported TAFE Queensland’s jewellery program, it felt natural for Diamondport Jewellers to continue this tradition.

As one of Brisbane's leading jewellers, Mr Portas recognised the value of connecting with emerging jewellers and contributing to their professional growth - something that has only strengthened over the years.

"This sponsorship is our long-term investment in the industry's future, and the quality of the apprentice pieces on display at the awards each year is remarkable," said Mr Portas.

"We’ve witnessed a continuous rise in craftsmanship, and it’s clear that TAFE Queensland’s training equips apprentices with the practical skills needed to create beautiful jewellery."

TAFE Queensland’s training program is known for its hands-on approach, giving apprentices real-world experience in all aspects of jewellery creation, from intricate design to handcrafting pieces.

This level of training aligns perfectly with the needs of businesses like Diamondport Jewellers, who rely on skilled artisans to deliver the exceptional quality their customers expect.

"We often use CAD designs and external casting services in our workshop, but apprentices learn to hand-make jewellery from start to finish at TAFE. That’s an invaluable skill we might not focus on in our day-to-day operations," Mr Portas explained.

The relationship between Diamondport Jewellers and TAFE Queensland deepened when the jeweller began employing TAFE Queensland-trained apprentices, witnessing first-hand how their apprentice, Karis, entered and excelled in the competition.

"Watching Karis showcase her work and grow in confidence was an incredibly proud and rewarding moment for the company. It reinforced our belief in the value of the sponsorship and the importance of nurturing young talent through TAFE Queensland's program," he continued.

Jewellery apprentices studying with TAFE Queensland attend block training at the South Bank campus, utilising industry-standard facilities and equipment that Mr Portas cites as the major reason for their professional growth.

While on campus, they learn about jewellery repair, stone and gem setting, metal casting, chain making, and technical drawing. They also develop the ability to design, use hand tools for precision work, and work safely with a wide range of materials.

"TAFE Queensland makes it easy for apprentices to balance work and study, with their structured training blocks fitting seamlessly around business schedules. It’s a well-thought-out program that doesn’t disrupt our workflow."

"Their apprenticeship program has also been invaluable for Diamondport Jewellers. It ensures our apprentices gain a comprehensive education, which makes them highly skilled and credible jewellers," he said.

"This depth of knowledge and the skills they gain from TAFE Queensland makes them incredibly versatile jewellers, setting them up for industry success."

"The practical hands-on training in handcrafting jewellery is second to none – and they return to the workshop with new skills and fresh ideas and add value to our business."

"The quality of their work is simply outstanding, and each year, the craftsmanship on display at the awards improves, directly reflecting the exceptional training these students receive."

“One major benefit of training with TAFE Queensland is the industry connections they make and the alumni community they foster. Karis keeps in touch with many of her classmates, sharing ideas, collaborating and benefitting the business,” he explained.

As Diamondport Jewellers celebrates its decade of sponsorship, it also remains committed to an ongoing partnership with TAFE Queensland, with plans to increase its involvement in the future, potentially becoming a headline sponsor as the business grows.

"We see this sponsorship as more than just giving back - it’s an opportunity to build relationships with the best jewellers of tomorrow, many of whom may work with us in the future," Mr Portas said.

TAFE Queensland’s Brisbane General Manager, Brent Kinnane, said the apprenticeship program is instrumental in providing future jewellers with the comprehensive training and industry connections needed to thrive.

“Industry connections are the cornerstone of TAFE Queensland's approach to education and training. By partnering with leading organisations, we ensure our students gain real-world experience and insights that align with current industry needs,” said Mr Kinnane.

“By maintaining an open dialogue, we can adapt our programs to changing market demands, latest technologies, trends, and skills the workforce requires, ensuring our students are well-prepared to meet future challenges,” he said.

This sentiment is echoed by the team at Diamondport Jewellers, who have experienced how powerful the program is in training young designers to add value throughout the industry.

"I can't recommend TAFE Queensland enough - their jewellery apprenticeship program is world-class, and their support, particularly from teachers like Jane Foster, is creating a new generation of talented jewellers the industry needs now and, in the future," concluded Mr Portas.

This 10-year partnership is a testament to the power of connection between education and industry, ensuring Australia’s jewellery sector remains vibrant and talented for years to come.
