From the classroom to the red carpet

TAFE Queensland's event management students immersed themselves in the world of glitz and glam at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards on the Gold Coast.

This prestigious event, became a practical learning ground for the students marking a significant milestone in their educational journey.

Diploma of Event Management  (SIT50322 | CRICOS: 112778G) student, Abbey Lee was surprised to dive into such an esteemed event so early in her course.

"When I was told we were going to be working at the AACTA's, I was so excited and honoured, but honestly shocked as well," she said.

The 18-year-old’s role involved managing the transition area from the red carpet to the indoor food and drink zone, a position that placed her at the heart of the action.

"The most exciting part of this experience would have to be Margot Robbie walking right by me," she said.

Meanwhile fellow Robina campus student, 25-year-old Emily Betts expressed gratitude for the opportunity.

"This is the first event of this scale that I’ve been privileged to be a part of, and to be involved was truly so special", said Emily.

“I never expected that an event of this calibre would offer a role to a student such as myself,  so to be able to put this on my resume is a dream come true.”

“The feeling of just being a part of something like this, even in this small way, was so overwhelmingly phenomenal.”

For Emily, gaining real world, firsthand experience is really important.

“Experiences like this is a contributing factor as to why I chose to study with TAFE Queensland. I put a lot of value in being able to learn theoretically and then applying that knowledge in the real world. It helps to develop my skills and give me confidence to build my profile within the industry,” she said.

To anyone thinking about studying events, Emily said TAFE Queensland is the place to study.

“The support offered to students is indispensable and the campus facilities, such as technology, student lounges, study pods and so much more, all make for a great learning environment.”

“TAFE Queensland also offers opportunities to strengthen your professional profile while you continue to learn. The teachers offer vocational placements and connect students to established professionals within the industry.”

TAFE Queensland General Manager, Karen Dickinson noted the positive feedback from the AACTA event organisers regarding the students' professionalism and enthusiasm.

“This partnership not only provided students with invaluable real-world experience but also showcased their capability and dedication to industry professionals,” said Ms Dickinson.
