Leif kicks off a new career with Football Queensland

“Some of my fondest childhood memories are of kicking the ball with his grandad, who never missed a game, even during illness,” explained Leif.

Football was Leif’s world growing up, playing through school and in local leagues. However, after moving to Queensland in 2007 and shifting his focus to music and football, he gradually took a backseat - though his love for Chelsea remained strong.

Fast forward to his 30s, Leif found himself seeking a career change. After years in hospitality management, he yearned for something more fulfilling and work that aligned with his passions and could have a more meaningful impact.

Reconnecting with sport for his mental health sparked his decision to pursue a Diploma of Sport (Coaching) (SIS50321) at TAFE Queensland in partnership with Football Queensland.

“I saw the course as an entry point into the industry—a way to learn the ropes, develop connections, and gain skills,” Leif explained.

Developed in partnership with Football Queensland, the program is designed to equip people with a passion for football with the tools to pursue success on and off the football pitch.

“When I realised it was delivered through Football Queensland, it felt like the perfect fit,” Leif explained.

Delivered in partnership with Football Queensland, the diploma helped Leif master coaching fundamentals, planning and delivering programs for high-performing athletes, applying sports psychology principles, and organising successful events.

He also gained essential industry skills in risk management, leadership, and workplace health and safety.

The partnership is offered through TAFE Queensland’s Academy of Sport and is designed to kickstart a sports industry career.

Leif’s training took place on-site at Football Queensland Head Quarters, giving him access to specialised facilities, expert mentors, and a mix of theoretical and practical learning.

Embedded in industry practice, his studies simulated a real-life sporting environment, where he discovered the expansive world behind the scenes of sports, from administration and event management to sports science and coaching.

Under the mentorship of Karl Dodd, a former professional player and coach, Leif gained hands-on experience with Football Queensland and the Brisbane Roar.

“Karl went above and beyond to support us. His guidance and knowledge prepared me to apply for my current Football Queensland role,” Leif said.

“What struck me was how many opportunities exist beyond playing - you don’t need to be an elite player to contribute meaningfully to the industry.”

Leif also benefitted from hands-on learning and work-integrated learning opportunities, which prepared him for his first role in his new sporting career.

He now feels honoured to work with a sport's governing body that has shaped his life and brought him endless joy.

“Football isn’t just a game to me - it’s my passion and my purpose. I’m excited to start this new chapter and contribute to a sport that’s given me so much,” concluded Leif.
