Tahnee's journey to redefine beauty standards with TAFE Queensland

Tahnee Bell’s journey into beauty therapy is a testament to resilience, inclusivity, and the power of community support.

As a proud Wirdi and Burri Gubba Indigenous person with Autism, ADHD, and several other disabilities, Tahnee’s path has not been without its challenges.

Yet, through their determination and the incredible support from TAFE Queensland, they have completed their Diploma of Beauty Therapy (Spa Treatments) (SHB50121) and are set to redefine beauty standards for everyone.

From the very beginning, Tahnee knew that beauty was for everyone.

"You are never too old, too masculine, too dark, too disabled, or too unconventional to enjoy self-expression and self-care," they said.

Tahnee's philosophy is grounded in the idea that the beauty industry should celebrate diversity and inclusivity, and they have made it their mission to uphold these values.

Tahnee emphasises that beauty brands and therapists are responsible for focusing on inclusivity, advocating that "beauty should no longer discriminate."

Tahnee’s journey began in 2020 when they first attempted to pursue her diploma through a private institute during the pandemic.

The theory-only approach made it difficult for Tahnee to succeed, and further challenges followed when they tried studying cosmetic tattooing online in 2021.

It wasn’t until 2023, when Tahnee enrolled at TAFE Queensland, that they found the environment they needed to thrive.

The educators and faculty at TAFE Queensland offered the patience, understanding, and support that Tahnee required to overcome their challenges and excel in their studies.

"I completed my diploma because of the incredible support, understanding, and patience from the educators and faculty at TAFE Queensland.”

“Their teachings, guidance, and hard work did not go unnoticed, and now that I’ve graduated, I hope to make them proud as we openly step into the world of beauty," Tahnee shared.

Tahnee also extended a heartfelt thanks to the Indigenous Student Support Officer, Morgan Cotter, who also helped them achieve their study goals.

“Morgan inspired me to take responsibility and commit to studying, and her encouragement helped me to finish my diploma - I'm very grateful for it, and I wouldn’t be here without it.”

Tahnee’s experience at TAFE Queensland has been transformative. They received industry-standard training and found a community that embraced them for who they were and supported them every step of the journey.

The hands-on learning approach and the nurturing environment at TAFE Queensland allowed Tahnee to overcome their doubts, face challenges head-on, and achieve their dreams.

As Tahnee steps into the beauty industry, they’re driven by passion, creativity, inclusivity, and a desire to redefine beauty standards.

Tahnee is excited to use their skills to make a difference for their clients and the industry. Their story is a powerful reminder that anyone can achieve their dreams when the support they receive matches their determination.

Tahnee’s journey inspires all who face obstacles in their path. With the drive, passion, and commitment to inclusivity, there’s no doubt Tahnee will make a lasting impact in the beauty industry.

Tahnee’s story is a celebration of the belief that beauty truly is for everyone, and with their TAFE Queensland training, Tahnee is ready to be the change they want to see in the industry.

"Now is our time, and we must redefine the industry or be on the wrong side of history," concluded Tahnee.
