Course overview

Take your career in engineering to the next level with this advanced, post-trade qualification. You can choose to specialise your engineering skills in mechanical, electrical/electronic, fabrication, diesel fitting, or fitting and turning.

In this course you will further enhance your skills in your existing trade or add to your skill set from other trades. Depending on your specialisation you may develop advanced skills in the design, assembly, manufacture, installation, modification, testing, fault finding, commissioning, maintenance, and service of equipment and machinery. You may also gain skills in the fabrication of structures and assemblies, manufacture of sheet metal work, and use of relevant machinery, equipment and joining techniques. Our industry experienced teachers will provide you with the support you need to succeed.

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to work across a variety of engineering related industries as a Higher Engineering Tradesperson or a Special Class Engineering Tradesperson - Level II . You will also have the ability to pursue further study in this area.

If you can demonstrate substantial competency in this qualification, you may be able to access funding for recognition of prior learning and gap training through the Trade Skills and Assessment Gap Training (TSAGT) program. What you will study

The successful achievement of this qualification requires you to complete all core units listed below, plus a combination of elective units with a total value of 132 points. Please note, elective units have various points values. If you are doing this course as part of your apprenticeship, elective units will be selected in consultation with your employer and included on your training plan. Otherwise, please contact us for information about which electives should be included in your training package.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

This qualification may be accessed by direct entry.

You must be already either be a tradesperson with access to a functioning engineering workplace for structured on the job training.

Apprenticeship pathway
To study an apprenticeship program you must be indentured as an apprentice with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources to qualify for an apprentice.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.
This includes the use of:

  • safety glasses
  • protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • leather gloves to AS2161
  • hair protection
  • You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing.

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

Assessment methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
