Course overview

TAFE Queensland is offering this exciting new course for those who would like to build your skills towards becoming as a CNC, CAD or CAM operator. 

This skill set will provide the skills and knowledge to produce 2-D computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) code files from existing computer-aided design (CAD) model and produce 3-D computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) code files from existing computer-aided design (CAD) models or from data collected by sample measurement.  

In this course you will be given an introduction in how to create both 2-D code files and 3-D code files. You will learn how to manage files and tools and customise installed software. 

Successful completion of this skill set allows you build your skills towards becoming as a CNC, CAD/CAM operator.

Entry requirements

Selection criteria

You must:

  • have Engineering Trade Qualification(s) or be currently working in Engineering industry
  • have basic computer literacy skills 
  • already hold the below pre-requisite units or be able to demonstrate (and provide evidence) the skills and knowledge for each of the pre-requisites units in order to be assessed for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Pre-requisites units: 

  • MEM09002 Interpret technical drawing
  • MEM12023 Perform engineering measurements
  • MEM12024 Perform computations
  • MEM13015 Work safely and effectively in manufacturing and engineering
  • MEM16006 Organise and communicate information
  • MEM16008 Interact with computing technology

If you do not meet the prerequisite requirements you will need to enrol into SSMEM0060 Prerequisites for Introduction to 2D and 3D CAM Skill Set. This course is only offered as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.
This includes the use of:

  • safety glasses
  • protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • you should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.
