Information about Away from Base
As an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student, you don't need to live near one of our campuses to study a course with us. We deliver a number of courses via residential study blocks.
Away from Base - Study Away from Home
These courses are registered as Away from Base Mixed-Mode Program (AFB) courses, which mean you may be able to have your travel, accommodation and meal allowances paid for you when you attend residential blocks.
Locations
You can study Away from Base courses at our North and South West regions.
Depending on where you study your residential block;
- At North: we can help with travel or accommodations.
- At South West: we help with accommodation only.
Eligibility
To be eligible for Away from Base assistance, you must be:
- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
- Enrolled in and studying an approved course at TAFE Queensland.
- Approved for ABSTUDY benefits for your studies.
How to apply
To apply, just click the Apply now button from your course page.
Or you can complete personal details form and return it to your Indigenous Student Support Officer.
Our team will check your eligibility for ABSTUDY before arranging your Away from Base support.

We can assist you to reach your goals in a culturally supportive way and provide assistance with applications, enrolment, ABSTUDY, Away from Base, tutoring or AccessAbility support, and referrals to other community service providers.
